Winter appeal: The gift of early literacy materials and learning opportunities to rural Tibetan children

Donate to make the dream of reading a reality.

Books are an essential part of how we navigate the world. They are mirrors, windows,
sliding doors that help us understand others, and ourselves. But in many of India’s rural communities, Tibetan children have limited access to early literacy materials or learning opportunities. There’s often no culturally relevant library and those that exist typically lack age-appropriate, child-friendly, culturally relevant books.

This is especially true for children in nomadic and semi-nomadic families, where tasks
like herding and milking, not reading, are prioritised. “At Shatsa, we work to motivate children to love to read,” said Ms. Tenzin Panten, Project Director at Shatsa, a non-profit organisation that conducts reading programmes for Tibetan youths. “The Tibet Relief Fund has partnered with us in this undertaking, and together, we can give the gift of literacy to more Tibetan children than ever.

Having access to books in our native language – which is increasingly under threat in Tibet – with characters who look and talk like us, is a dream for many young Tibetans. A donation from you today can help make that dream reality.

Here’s how your support can change lives:

  • £16 can support a part-time project director to set up readings, workshops, and events at our partner organisation, the Manjushri Children’s Library in Dharamsala.
  • £46 can help to cover salaries for Shatsa’s librarians.
  • £350 can fund mobile libraries, capable of bringing reading materials and supplies printed by Manjushri to hundreds of children in snowy, rural districts.
