Why Stormgirl decided to team up with Tibet Relief Fund - in her own words.....
“What I would really like to say about why I became involved with Tibet Relief Fund is mainly because I have always been a kind and compassionate person, and I have a huge respect and admiration for HH The Dalai Lama and was overwhelmed when I learnt about the strength of character of the Tibetan people, who after so much suffering are still able to retain their beautiful and positive outlook. I was especially touched and immensely overawed by theinner strength and fortitude of human willpower of the Tibetan children who are forced to leave their families and homes, to trek the treacherous icy mountains to a safe haven in Tibetan Homes Foundation. This helped me through my own personal trials and challenges in life, and when I was climbing my own metaphorical mountains, I imagined how much endurance the children must have had during their trek - and kept going for days (which must have seemed never ending days of trekking). I immediately wanted to help a child, if not all of the children, but knew that at the very least if I could give one child my support then I would at least have made a small difference to the Tibetan people. So I began sponsoring a Tibetan child in 2004, and will continue to sponsor my child, and it’s my intention to help my sponsor child further by inviting her to come and stay in the UK with me to enhance her educational needs, and provide her with as much support as I can.
Stormgirl the character has herself risen from the ashes, as I faced the biggest challenges and losses in 2009, and whilst it was the most difficult experience I have ever gone through, I have created a new life from this, and have found that within each of us ‘there is a superhero’, and that ‘any challenge in life is there to make us stronger’; and we are not victims, but have an incredible power within us which we can use to better our lives and the lives of others. We must never give up! Through loss, we have the chance to start again with new friends, new opportunities, and new and better things. I believe that we have life as a gift and we are only here a short time; and that whilst we have to go through such difficulties, we are not without power, as our original source has given us the strength to do all that we are meant to.
Just over a year ago, I had many fears which held me back and made me a prisoner of my own life, and yet after losing three things I loved in three months, I then knew that I had nothing left to lose... so I faced one of my biggest fears which was driving and went out on the race track at Silverstone! In August 2009, I created ‘Stormgirl’ as I found within myself an inner strength to turn my life around - and felt a like a superhero when I got into my very fast Nissan 370z sportscar. Since then, I have come together with a very good friend and artist Keiron Ward who has helped me to bring to life my Stormgirl comic book character - and together we are working on the Stormgirl ‘origins’ comic book. As Stormgirl I appear at various motorsport events, and also appeared at the London Film & Comic convention in July 2010 amongst the real Stars of Star Wars films. I am very excited about the comic book, which is due to be launched in Autumn 2010.
For me the Tibet Relief Fund project ‘Empowering the Vision’ demonstrates what I believe to be a strong message - that we are able to take back our own power through trials and not to allow challenges in life to stop us or get in the way of our true destiny. I am enjoying my new life and hope to be able to help inspire others to turn their lives around.”

Please donate now to help us supply food, clothing and shelter

On 14th April, at 8am local time, a massive earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale, struck Yushu (Kyegundo) county in Qinghai province, eastern Tibet. As reports filed in describing utter devastation in this already extremely poor remote area - the rising death toll, that thousands were left homeless and the region’s infrastructure completely destroyed - Tibet Relief Fund set up an immediate emergency online appeal to help survivors. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters worldwide. Thank you so much if you have already contributed; we have already been able to distribute £5,000 of urgent aid to survivors. However, three months on the people of Yushu are still in desperate need.
The situation is dire. Every family in the region has lost friends and relatives; the majority of survivors have lost their homes and have few remaining belongings. Over 100,000 people are sleeping outdoors or in lightweight tents, with little or no lighting, healthcare or cooking facilities. As overnight temperatures drop below zero, with snow and strong winds, shortages of food, fuel, and medical supplies, there are major concerns for the vulnerable and injured and anxiety about sanitation and spread of disease. The need for both short-term and long-term aid is monumental; we desperately need your help. In these unimaginable conditions, despite the valiant efforts and generosity of Tibetan, Chinese and international donors, there is a major lack of basic vital necessities. Long-term prospects for survivors are equally bleak; with little or no remaining accommodation, education, healthcare or opportunities to provide an income. We are working closely with other organisations on the ground to assess the most critical needs; and as a result of our findings, are initially looking to raise a further £25,000.
Background:
The earthquake struck a poor remote area, predominately high altitude grassland, crossed with mountain ranges and deep river valleys, in the north-east of the Tibetan Plateau. Life here was already very harsh for the local Tibetans, mainly herdsmen and nomads, as they struggled against extreme poverty. The earthquake’s epicentre was at the base of the valleys, where Yushu Town, the prefecture’s capital and only major town of the region, is situated. Villages up to tens of kilometres away were also devastated; around 85 per cent of the buildings – mostly traditionally mud brick built – were flattened and in some villages, it is reported 99 per cent of buildings collapsed. In the blink of an eye, 100,000 people were left without a home. But these were the lucky ones as family homes, hostels and, tragically, many schools and orphanages collapsed with their residents trapped inside. One of our contacts in the area told us that many homes had a layer of thick, clear plastic under the roof to insulate and protect their households from water and dust. As the buildings collapsed, many people died by suffocation as they were trapped under the plastic sheeting, unable to breathe. In total nearly 2,700 people were killed in the quake and 12,000 injured. As the dust settled, chaos ensued as shell-shocked and injured survivors desperately tried to pull people from the wreckage, search for their relatives and friends and find medical aid. As night fell, people slept in the streets, their possessions gone, without shelter.
As the days went on, people continued to live like this; orphans, elderly people, parents who had lost children and spouses spending the days crying, bewildered, trying to find out what had happened to their loved ones, needing food and medical attention. They still had to sleep in the streets without shelter, with strong storms and snow making the sub-freezing night time conditions unbearable. Every person in the region lost someone from their extended family. As you may have seen in news reports, scores of monks piled in from monasteries throughout the region to help residents rescue survivors and dig out dead bodies from collapsed homes and buildings. The Chinese government and army sent in rescue teams to help; and urgent aid began arriving from local communities across the region, with truckloads of supplies arriving from Tibetan and Chinese people from surrounding areas. But downed phonelines, collapsed bridges and storms hampered the rescue efforts, with a series of aftershocks further damaging roads, triggering landslides and crippling power supplies.
As the days went on, people relocated from the streets to the large open plateau ‘horse festival ground’ west of the town, where thousands of blue tents supplied by the Chinese government were filled with bereft and injured survivors, struggling to breathe in the dust filled air, while storm winds blew down their tents, scattering their few possessions. Today the situation in Yushu remains unimaginably desperate for hundreds of thousands of survivors. Tibet Relief Fund urgently needs help to provide both short-term emergency aid for food, shelter and basic needs, and funding to begin reconstruction of homes and infrastructure. As you can imagine, working in this remote region is very difficult. Tibet Relief Fund has been co-ordinating closely with organisations already working in the area who have local experience and contacts and who are carrying out detailed short-term and long-term needs assessments. In this way we are ensuring funds are transferred to where they are most urgently needed and will have effective impact. Short-term needs: Amongst the rubble and grief in Yushu now, an enormous tragedy is unfolding, with many thousands of people in need of urgent help just to survive the coming months. The short-term needs are seemingly immeasurable, but we have prioritised some of the most vital requirements based on the needs assessments carried out on the ground. These show the most pressing need is for food, clothing, tents, stoves and cooking facilities, blankets and basic hygiene kits.
We have been approached with a specific urgent request to supply supplementary foods including tsampa (roasted barley flour, a nutritious and traditional Tibetan staple food that will keep for months), butter and tea for nearly 3,000 families - including many elderly and young children. We have also been asked to supply food and clothing for many destitute and orphaned children from some of the area’s primary schools. Many of these children have lost everything – they are urgently in need of clothing to last them for the foreseeable future. Until shelters can be rebuilt, tents will provide the sole accommodation for surviving families; this will be for at least six months and quite probably through next winter. Whilst the government has supplied tents for each family officially registered in Yushu, we have reports of 15,000 unregistered Tibetans in the area currently without any form of shelter, including many hundreds of elderly people. And even with the government supplied tents there is urgent concern as the tents’ nylon-like material is already proving inadequate and will not last into the winter. Moreover, the fabric will quickly melt if a stove is placed inside the tent (which will be necessary in winter). As winter approaches there is a vital need to replace these already desperately overcrowded tents with durable canvas ones; as well as provide stoves and solar lighting.
A small bag of basic toiletries including soap and a nit-comb, will cost just £2.50 and help keep disease at bay. A £10 blanket will keep out the cold, and a £15 set of kitchen utensils and bowls means a family can cook and store the little food they have. Long-term needs: In addition to short-term aid to sustain lives now, we have to look to the future and ensure survivors have shelter, healthcare and an income to survive in the coming months, and years ... we have to help build the foundations of a sustainable future for the devastated people of Yushu.
Whilst the Chinese government is working on long-term plans to re-establish infrastructure and re-building, Tibet Relief Fund is working with other organisations on the ground to ‘fill in the gaps’; particularly in the more remote townships and villages, ensuring vulnerable groups’ specific needs are met.
With your help, we will enable the men, women and children of Yushu to look forward to a self-sufficient future, with their own homes, where children can be educated, where there is self-sustainable employment, and where medical facilities are available.
As you can imagine, the scale of this long-term operation is immense and due to extreme weather conditions, high altitude, poor transportation infrastructure, high construction costs and insufficient power supply, it will take time. Whilst it will be many weeks before we can itemise the full details and costs involved in rebuilding sustainable housing, healthcare, educational facilities and infrastructure, the planning and groundwork is in progress. However, what we do know is the costs involved in rebuilding Yushu will amount to many hundreds of thousands of pounds. Tibet Relief Fund has a duty to help enable this rebuilding as soon as possible.
Please help us if you can. We will use funds from this appeal where they are most needed for either short or long-term aid for Yushu. Below are short-term costed requirements (we cannot emphasise enough the scale and need for these items): £10 can pay for four basic hygiene kits or one warm blanket £15 can pay for one 40kg sack of tsampa (barley flour) to feed a destitute family for weeks. A further £15 will provide a set of kitchen utensils and bowls £50 can pay for a full set of warm protective clothing – coat, shirt, trousers, shoes, underwear – and a bag, for one destitute or orphaned primary school child over the uncertain future months £100 can pay for one large durable canvas tent to provide shelter over the bitter winter months £200 can pay for one large durable canvas tent, plus a stove and a solar light; to provide shelter, heat, light and cooking facilities for one family Please give what you can . Thank you. We will keep you updated on details of both emergency and restructuring work being undertaken.

Please donate now to help give the surviving Tibetan people of Yushu (Kyegundo) county a future.

Tibet Relief Fund has launched an appeal for victims of today’s earthquake; donations can be made online through http://tinyurl.com/AppealforYushu or direct to our office on 020 7272 1414. In response to the devastating news of the earthquake, Philippa Carrick, Chief Executive of Tibet Relief Fund, said “We have launched an emergency appeal that will help local people to rebuild a sustainable future in the aftermath of this disaster, so perhaps something positive can come out of this tragedy. Natural calamities are always heartbreaking; that this has happened in such a poor and remote area of Tibet, where people were already struggling against poverty and ill-health and there is little in the way of hope or help, is even more distressing. Thousands of people are facing loss and further real hardship and suffering as families will have to live without much shelter in temperatures that drop to below freezing overnight.” This major earthquake, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, struck Yushu county in Qinghai province eastern Tibet just before 8am local time on 14 April. Initial reports put the death toll at 300, this has now risen substantially. It is feared it could reach more that 2,000, with a further 8,000 casualties. The epicentre of the earthquake was Rima village, Jyeku (pronounced Cheku), capital of Yushu County, where it has been reported that 80 per cent of the Tibetan buildings, including schools, have been destroyed. Thousands of local residents, over 95 per cent being Tibetan, face overnight temperatures below freezing without shelter. There is no electricity and all the telephone lines are down, so contact with the outside world will become difficult once mobile phone batteries expire. Through Tibetan contacts, Tibet Relief Fund has learnt there is much confusion on the ground and it is hard to get any realistic figures. People are very worried about the lack of electricity and concerned that they will soon be facing problems with the water supply. The police and local people are doing their best to help to pull out people who remain trapped under the rubble. There were no foreign charities or NGOs operating on the ground, but those operating in China are sending relief as fast as they can and the Chinese government is sending army troops to help with the rescue efforts. Local people are shocked at the scale of the devastation, though it is believed the impact may be limited to the Yushu County area, with no major affects in the surrounding regions. Rescue efforts are hampered by the remoteness of the region: Jyeku is 500 miles from the nearest airport and roads in the region have been badly damaged. The capital of Yushu county is Jyeku town, which is well known for its annual Jyekundo horse racing festival. The county has a population of around 100,000, with around 21,700 farmers and herdsmen. The area is also famous for its water, with the source of the head of four major waterways: the Ngul-chu (Salween) Da-chu (Mekong) Dri-Chu (Yangtze) and Dza-Chu (Yalong) rivers being in the area, hence the name traditionally given to Kham: ‘Chuzhi gangdruk’ (Four river and six ranges). Historically, this area formed part of the five independent kingdoms of east Tibet, the Kingdom of Nangchen; Nangchen was formerly one of the five independent kingdoms of East Tibet. Its territory corresponds to the upper reaches of the five main Mekong feeder rivers: the Ngom-chu, Do-chu, Dza-chu, Tsi-chu and Kyang-chu.

Stipends for the elderly in Lodrik settlements

Tibet Relief Fund supports elderly Tibetans living in Nepal, providing stipends for healthcare, food, clothing and accommodation. These people were young, strong men when China attacked and occupied their country. They sacrificed their youth working to protect their families, their friends and their countrymen. They knew they were risking their lives when they signed up to undertake top secret operations to collect information on China’s strategies in Tibet, hoping their efforts could help bring back their country’s freedom. Tragically, many paid the ultimate price.
Those that survived had no choice but to leave their country. They made the sad difficult journey to Nepal in the 1960s and 70s; eventually settling on a plot of land near Pokhara, where their makeshift camps eventually grew into the three ‘Lodrik’ Tibetan refugee settlements that remain today. Here they began to create a new life in exile. By now in their forties and fifties, the men began taking up carpet weaving, wool spinning and handicrafts to sustain themselves. The difficulties faced by the men, their families and the growing Lodrik settlements’ inhabitants were overwhelming – a sheer lack of skills to sustain a regular income, lack of housing, and a lack of schooling for their children, meagre healthcare facilities to cope with problems exacerbated by the vast change in climate from their homeland. But they used the profits from their handicraft work to provide basic facilities for the welfare of all the settlements’ inhabitants, and they struggled on.
In the early 1990s problems affecting the carpet industry in Nepal began to have a knock-on effect on Tibetan refugee handicraft businesses throughout Nepal. The Lodrik settlements were hard hit – they were forced to close down almost all of their business units. Left with no alternative source of income, Lodrik was forced to use up their precious reserves just to provide basic facilities for the people. They began to cultivate their land to provide their own food in the hope of becoming self sufficient. And so, with help from the Tibetan Government in Exile, Lodrik continues to this day.
For some years, a large international charity provided the annual funding required to cover the running of Lodrik’s old people’s home and the distribution of stipends for the elderly and frail Tibetan heroes who had come to Pokhara so many years ago. But with very little notice, this charity has recently pulled out, and Lodrik is in crisis.
From the 2,000 fearless young Tibetan men who set out to defy the occupation of their country 60 years ago; just 330 elderly men remain today. Now in their eighties and nineties, their eyes have seen much tragedy; they have faced much hardship and risen to many challenges. Once young, strong, fearless and full of hope, they are now forced to face the last years of their lives in an exiled land unable to support themselves any longer.
If you would like to help with a donation, please contact the Tibet Releif Fund office on 020 7272 1414 or donate securely online here .
Just £10 can provide one of these men with healthcare, food, clothing and accommodation for a whole month. £120 can provide all of this for a whole year.
Thank you.
Case Study
Lobsang Rabten was one of the strong brave young men who accompanied the Dalai Lama on his flight into exile in 1959. For many years he risked his life working to collect top secret information from Chinese forces in an effort to help his beloved homeland regain its freedom. Unlike many of his comrades, and despite a Chinese bullet ripping straight through his torso, Lobsang survived.
Forced to flee his country in the 1970s, Lobsang is now a frail old man living in Lodrik’s home for the elderly in Jampaling. His wife has passed away, one son has moved away to work for a better life; his other two children need care for their disabilities.
Lobsang has seen the occupation of his country, the loss of his friends and family, the failure of his settlement’s business and now faces the withdrawal of funding that helped provide himself and his former countrymen with their daily sustenance. Just £10 can provide Lobsang, and others like him, with healthcare, food, clothing and accommodation for a whole month.
