Peace mandala created … and destroyed in Haggerston, London

Tibet Relief Fund was excited to host an amazing event in east London last weekend. Monks from the Tashi Lhunpo monastery in south India created a beautiful peace mandala from sand, at an exhibition of vivid photos of the monastery by Geoff Harris. The exhibition was held at the Hive, a local creative community space, and attracted scores of local residents and Tibet Relief Fund supporters.
The monks painstakingly created the mandala by slowly building the layers and intricate patterns using coloured sand. The mandala is a Buddhist art tradition, rich in symbolism, and often used for meditation. A mandala made of sand is also a reminder of impermanence and non-attachment.
The Tashi Lhunpo monks then destroyed the mandala in a traditional ceremony, leading a procession of people down to the canal to watch them throw the sand into the water – a dramatic sight for this normally quiet stretch of Kingsland Road!

The exhibition of 23 vibrant photos by Geoff Harris was held to raise vital funds for Tibet Relief Fund’s work and the Tashi Lhunpo monastery. You can now purchase the individual signed and framed photos which were displayed at the exhibition for just £150 each, or an unframed, unsigned print for £40.
