Emergency earthquake sponsorship

Location Kathmandu, Nepal
Type Emergency and Education
Amount £990

Project
In the aftermath of the 2015, we were asked to help provide emergency sponsorship for six students from a remote area of Nepal called Walung – five days travel from Kathmandu.

The students all have parents whose businesses and homes were drastically affected by the earthquakes. Being from a remote area like Walung, the student’s parents rely on tourism and petty business for their livelihoods. After the earthquakes, no tourists came and their parents’ only source of income was cut off. With little money to live on, they simply could not afford to pay their children’s school fees.

These six students were all in their final year of school were facing the prospect of being unable to complete their education.

We were able to give a grant to help cover the outstanding cost of their fees and living costs – meaning they could all finish their final years and
graduate.

All six students have now graduated and they couldn’t be happier!

“Today here I am holding my graduation certificate. If you didn’t help me today I am not be able to have my graduation certificate. Thank you for everything you did for me!”

– Dolma Kyizom, student from Walung
