Background and location

“Winter holiday would not be something to look forward to for me if we don’t have the winter activities. I can’t imagine the holiday being an interesting one without the activities during these two months.” – Dunkyi

There are 550 children at Tibetan Homes Foundation schools who cannot go home for the winter holidays. Some are orphaned and some have their only family still living in Tibet. Others come from remote settlements and poor families and their parents can’t afford to keep them at home for the holidays.

During the two month break the school run winter activities and trips so the pupils who stay there can have some fun and feel like they are not missing out.

Projects
The winter activities grant we provide annually helps towards the cost of running some activities, buying warm clothes and taking the children on a trip.

This winter, the grant helped fund…

    • a pilgrimage trip to Bodh Gaya for 45 students from the middle and senior schools to visit a very important place for Buddhists – the town of Bodh Gaya in India which is where the Buddha became enlightened. The children were very fortunate this year because they also got to attend a ceremony presided over by the Dalai Lama
    • a winter picnic and three day camping trip at the local picnic spot known as Robber’s Cave
    • craft and cooking classes over two weeks for students to try their hand at book binding, butter lamp making and Tibetan cookie baking!
    • a shopping trip with some pocket money so the children could buy some new clothes, shoes and toys
