Nangchen Nyernga Elder's Home

Providing Dignity, Care and Community for Elderly Tibetans living in exile in Nepal

For many elderly Tibetan refugees living in exile in Nepal, growing older can mean facing isolation, poor health and uncertainty without family support or access to state care.

For more than 25 years, the Nangchen Nyernga Old People’s Home in Kathmandu has provided a safe and compassionate home for elderly Tibetans who would otherwise have nowhere to turn. Rooted in the Tibetan values of compassion, respect and community, the Home ensures residents can live their later years with dignity, stability and connection.

Why It Matters Here

Many of the elders living at the Home fled Tibet decades ago and spent their lives rebuilding in exile. Now in old age, many face chronic health conditions, limited financial security and little social support.

In Nepal, Tibetan refugees have no formal refugee status and very limited access to healthcare or social services. This means essential needs — including medical care, safe drinking water and daily support — depend almost entirely on charitable funding.

Without continued support, some of the community’s most vulnerable elders would face serious hardship.

Care That Supports Everyday Life

The Home provides far more than shelter. It is a place of safety, companionship and daily care for elderly Tibetans who would otherwise face growing older alone.

Funding helps provide clean drinking water, emergency medical support and a dedicated caretaker who assists residents with meals, healthcare appointments and everyday wellbeing. The Home also gives residents comfort, stability and the reassurance that they are cared for within a compassionate community.

Residents continue to celebrate important cultural traditions together, helping preserve connection, identity and joy in later life.

The Difference It Makes

Reliable support brings comfort, security and peace of mind to elderly residents who have already endured displacement and loss throughout their lives.

Access to safe water protects health and wellbeing, while emergency medical funding ensures urgent care is never out of reach. Daily support and companionship help residents feel safe, respected and valued within a caring community environment.

Most importantly, the Home provides something every older person deserves — the ability to age with dignity, stability and compassion.
